Why are children’s movies so popular?

Movie makers get the right balance just right when they create a new movie that appeals to the whole family.

Cinema theaters and movie makers are looking at box office ratings. So if a typical family of mum, dad and kids go to the cinema that is 4 tickets. (Not to mention the popcorn, sweets of soft drinks!) So it is easy to see why the film makers love making films that appeal to the whole family.

When the movie magic really works.

The success of a good film is based on one that the kids love, adults can relate to and is watchable and keeps their children happy and quiet during the movie. Disney have worked for nearly 100 years on getting this ‘magic’ formula just right and have created some of the best known and most loved movies of all time.

Not to mention other sucessful movies like Star Wars both the original triology and prequel triology which have become some of the most sucessful films of al time. The star Wars name and merchandise have been very sucessfull for over 30 years.

Childrens books to movies

J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter books which have two enteries in the top 10 most successful movies with Harry Potter (The Philosphers Stone) and Harry Potter (Chamber of Secrets). The Harry Potter movies have been transformed from children’s books, however the books also appealed to adults and the same can be said about the movies. This is what makes a children’s movie successful.

3D films -Will the love affair last?

3D Movies are an old idea with the first  3D films becoming popular in the 1950′s were we would see a whole auidence with the red and blue glasses staring at the cinema screen.  The golden era was 1952 to 1955 to be precise.  The decline started in 1953 the  movie industry niche because of the cost of the process required to produce and display a 3D movie. This combined with a lack of a standardized format made it impossibble to maintain.

The main reason for this was the technology required for projecting films in 3D was two prints had to be projected simultaneously.  Sometimes two projectionists to keep syncronization working and some theatres could not cope with the extra expense and people started to fall out of love with 3D as it was deemed a great idea at first but not a great viewing experience. So the movie makers started to improve the sound quality with the introduction of Dolby.

The rebirth of 3D movies

The main factor is the technology used to create a film now makes it easier for makers to also create a 3D version of the film. This is especially true with computer generated movies. (CGI). Now the technology is available to make 2D films in to 3D. George Lucas is working on recreating the Star Wars movies in to 3D direct from the original 2D footage, so whilst we still love 3D and the technology is available we will continuie to see a growth in 3D movies.

Inception Review

12A cert, 148 min Incepption movie trailer

“The trailer for this movie made me want to go and see it!”

The film trailer looked great and is the story is based on a concept of a criminal gang that had mastered the art of extraction by stealing valuable secrets from peoples dreams via .their own drug induced dream. The opening line  was “Do no think of elephants. – Now tell me what you are thinking?” The answer was elephants! After demonstrating this simple mind trick the cast go on a journey to incept dreams.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard

The movie switched from reality to dreams and had some very clever special effects, however it was difficult to know when the characters were in a dream or not. At 2 hours and  28 minutes long I began to wonder if I was slipping in to a dream or if I really had queued up for over 45 minutes to see what could have been a great movie or a movie with the strangest plot I have ever seen.
